A modern centralized banking system migrated to Java.

Overview

Role: Developer
Stack: Java
Key Result: Successfully migrated a legacy C++ banking system to Java while introducing advanced analytics and support features.
Summary: This project is a continuation and migration of the original CS0053 Case Study (C++ Version). The goal was to migrate the core logic into a new programming language (Java) and implement modern product features like mobile banking simulation, a customer portal, and a data analytics dashboard.

The Problem

Challenge: Porting existing C++ OOP logic into Java while extending the system's capabilities significantly.
Audience: Academic evaluators and for expanding my portfolio into Java ecosystem.
Constraints: Adapting to Java's strict object-oriented paradigms and setting up new features without breaking existing banking workflows.

Approach & Decisions

Architecture: A modernized object-oriented application utilizing Java's robust standard libraries.
Key Decisions: Decided to expand the feature set during the migration rather than just doing a 1:1 port, adding automated customer support and data analytics.
Trade-offs: Exchanged the manual memory management speed of C++ for the cross-platform portability and extensive standard libraries of Java.
Data Flow: User Input -> Java Application Runtime -> Extended Modules (Analytics/Support) -> Output.

Key Results & Impact

Outcome: A significantly expanded banking platform that handles traditional operations alongside modern analytics.
Impact: Demonstrated the ability to migrate legacy systems and scale them with modern features.

Technical Deep Dive

Notable Details: Implemented a Data Analytics Dashboard and Automated Customer Support modules directly within the Java environment.
Verification: Verified transaction integrity during the language migration to ensure mathematical accuracy of deposits/withdrawals.
Optimizations: Leveraged Java's garbage collection and class loading for a more stable runtime compared to the C++ manual memory handling.
Code Quality: Maintained strong OOP principles, utilizing interfaces and abstract classes where appropriate.

Reflections

Differently: I would have liked to integrate a proper SQL database to make the data analytics dashboard even more robust.
Successes: Successfully migrated the entire system and added complex new features simultaneously.
Lessons: Learned the fundamental differences and advantages of Java over C++ for enterprise-style application architecture.

My Contributions

System Design: Designed the Java architecture and new modules (Analytics, Support).
Implementation: Migrated all C++ logic to Java, implemented the Customer Portal, and wrote the execution driver.

This project utilizes a standard Java application structure without external visual frameworks.

- Modules: Custom classes handling the Customer Portal, Analytics Dashboard, and Security Protocols.
