The Problem

• Challenge: Modern applications depend on massive amounts of public data and open-source packages spread across multiple registries. Gathering high-dimensional metadata (dependency trees, package integrity, author profiles, and download statistics) is hard to do at scale. Pages are frequently single-page applications (SPAs) with complex dynamic client-side rendering, and simple HTTP requests often trigger rate limits or IP restrictions.

• Architecture: A modular Scrapy-based crawling framework running in isolated container environments, utilizing database-backed pipelines and automated triggers.

  • Custom Selenium Downloader Middleware: Built to handle dynamic JavaScript-rendered tables and expand selectors seamlessly, ensuring page elements are fully loaded before parsing.
  • Containerized Workloads: Packaged the spiders, middleware, and Chrome headless binaries into modular containers to support scaling and rapid deployment cycles.
  • NoSQL Persistence: Used a flexible NoSQL storage scheme to handle write loads for 60+ dynamic parameters without undergoing schema migrations when source websites update.
• Trade-offs: Headless browser execution is slower than standard requests. The downloader middleware was optimized to run Selenium only for pages requiring client-side JS rendering, while using native asynchronous HTTP requests for static endpoints and public APIs.

This was achieved through valuable code reviews, architecture guidance, and continuous feedback loop from the tech lead, seniors, and junior colleagues.
